One of the first things any visitor to Nanaimo picks up on is the lack of hotels Unlike Victoria, when planning a stay in Nanaimo there’s little choice as to where to sleep.
In it’s article dated January 14, The Times Columnist put it succinctly – Nanaimo is Fertile Ground for New Hotels.
In that article they mention two proposed hotel projects for the city, 15 Front Street and 100 Gordon Street.
100 Gordon St., a city-owned lot designated for that use and next door to the Vancouver Island Conference Centre (VICC), has seen two previous development plans collapse, most recently in summer 2015.
City hall has made no secret of their desire however to see a hotel on that property to help drive business at the Conference Centre, and now it starting to look like they might get their wish as this highly-anticipated downtown Nanaimo hotel is another step closer to becoming reality.
The council has approved a 10-year tax exemption and development permit for a Utah-based PEG Developments to build a proposed a nine-storey, 155-room Courtyard by Marriott.
Apparently the city has stated that the 10-year tax exemption means PEG will not pay roughly $450,000 per year in municipal taxes. As part of the agreement, the hotel must be open by December 2020.
The proposal features an outdoor patio aligned with Museum Way, something Perry said is an effort to “activate the street level” to create a connection between the hotel and conference centre. “Our hope is to really open that whole front side of the building…to make that street corner quite a bit more vibrant.”
The project is PEG’s second in B.C., with another Courtyard by Marriott to open in Prince George in early 2018. The developers will now need to submit an application for a building permit and they hope to break ground in spring 2018.

Hi, I’m Jeff Wood and I love living in Nanaimo! And I love helping people make their move!
My wife and I moved to Nanaimo from Richmond in 2015, after raising our two kids there. We brought along our two precocious Border Collies; Jake and Cochise, who are sure they moved to Doggy Disneyland in the process. We live in Upper Lantzville and love it!
Before becoming a Realtor, I was a professional investor owning 8 multi-family properties with 24 tenants. I also spent 20 years as an Executive Headhunter, finding talented people for Fortune 500 clients in the USA and Canada. In that role, I functioned regularly as a professional negotiator, working with both sides to create a win win scenario. I also helped candidates relocate to start their new jobs and thus I have a lot of relocation experience.
Now as a realtor I apply all of these hard earned skills to the benefit of my clients, whether they’re buying, or selling, delivering results that move them!
